Psychiatry is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems. Psychotherapy, psychotropic medication, and psycho-social interventions are treatments utilized by psychiatrists to address and manage these disorders.
Forensic Psychiatry is a branch of medicine which focuses on the interface of law and mental health. It may include psychiatric consultation in a wide variety of both civil and criminal legal matters (sometimes with expert testimony), as well as clinical work with perpetrators and victims. Forensic psychiatrists work with attorneys, courts, or other parties involved in actual or potential litigation.
